Gallagher Family Testimony

It Began in Our Own Home…

The Wisdom of Care was born out of our own transformational journey as an adoptive family of vulnerable children. Children who did not receive what they needed from the very beginning: who experienced trauma in the womb, at birth, and had been repeatedly left alone, uncomforted and afraid. Consequently, their brains worked differently—and therefore, they needed to be cared for differently.

After witnessing my mom and dad care with so much compassion and so much faith for over a decade, I saw them humbly realize “compassion was not enough” to provide the kind of healing and transformation my adopted siblings truly needed. So they cried out for more of God’s wisdom, knowledge and understanding. They knew they needed more strength and support on the journey of shepherding these precious, vulnerable children.

My parents and I all had the privilege to be equipped through Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®)’s highest level of practitioner training. Here, we witnessed the most effective and restorative interventions, developed and implemented over 30 years in the lives of thousands of vulnerable children and their families. This made our hearts and conviction deepen all the more to see suffering and surviving children and families be restored and strengthened. Yet, what we witnessed next was by far the most transformational…

A few months after receiving this life-changing equipping, I heard the Lord speak these words:

“The whole Bible is stories of children from hard places…” and, “We’re all vulnerable children in need of trust-based relationship.” And Jesus was revealed as the Perfect Caregiver.

From this moment onward, none of us have ever been the same…

This equipping, followed by this encounter opened our eyes to see the whole Bible, the value and vulnerability of life, the purpose of relationship and family, and God’s heart for His children with a radically new understanding. So we were prompted us to marry together the truths that were being reveled by the Holy Spirit with the truths that had been revealed through TBRI®. Ultimately leading us to devote years to pursuing Scripture, the revelation Jesus, and the ways of His care, with the Fear of the Lord on behalf God’s original design for family, relationship and caregiving.

So, over the course of 10+ years of lived experience, 5+ years of studying and practicing TBRI®, as well receiving increasing revelations from the Word of God, and coming together in it all through an intimate season as mother, father and daughter... the “Wisdom of Care” was developed.

We praise Jesus that the journey of caring for vulnerable children in our own home has allowed us to see God’s glorious design and ways of care for every developing child in every family. The Father’s heart and our hope is for all children to be cared for at home, in a way that establishes a secure, trust-based foundation for their lives and all future relationships.

We believe God is calling every generation to return to Jesus, the Good Shepherd... and to shepherd in His image.

We believe He is calling all mothers and fathers and all future mothers and future fathers consider in new depth and measure: “Do you love Me? Tend My sheep...” (John 21) This is how it started with us.

We’re not experts. We’re still on the journey. We magnify Christ as witnesses of His care, His voice and His ways. We share this witness with the fear of the Lord…

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

—Proverbs 9:10

Wisdom of Care Story...

"Do you love Me? Tend My sheep." —John 21:16

Before it was even named, the Wisdom of Care began as humble, intimate gatherings with friends around the table…

Here, we were able to teach the pillar concepts of TBRI® and impart God-given revelation about the transformational care of Jesus. Over the course of the next 3 years, we began responding to growing hunger in our community—not only of parents of vulnerable children—but to all mothers and fathers, leaders, disciple-makers, and even “future parents.”

All who came were not only benefiting in their parenting or ministries—but being personally transformed. In every gathering we were seeing radical healing and growth in marriages, families, leadership and primary relationships—especially with Jesus Himself. So we payed attention to how God alone was moving. We had no plans to develop, build or offer anything, but in faith and with the fear of the Lord, we responded to how the Spirit was moving for what we believe He has graciously given us to steward. And along with pages-worth of stories and testimonies, we founded, what is becoming a formal offering and resources—to families, “future families,” and caregivers of the vulnerable.

Dr. Karyn Purvis’s Life & Legacy

Dr. Karyn Purvis worked with over 10,000 vulnerable children in her decades of fostering, clinical practice and professional research. Like none before her, Karyn brought radical healing to children who had experienced trauma, abuse and neglect—and radical equipping to their caregivers.

We believe this was because she—not only worked with—but personally tended these vulnerable children and their families…

Karyn was an intimate part of disarming crippling fear, returning lost worth, and restoring these surviving children’s whole-beings—as well as equipping their primary caregivers in the complex, long-term battles that are often part of tending the vulnerable.

Karyn deeply understood the fierce damage that trauma, abuse and neglect have on children’s brains, bodies, biologies, behaviors and belief systems. This allowed her to intervene with a radical depth of wisdom, knowledge, insight, compassion and tenderness in her care for them.

And this produced measures of hope and healing that nobody ever believed to be possible for such children.

The interventions she was a primary part of developing are based on decades of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research—yet the heartbeat of all of them is connection.

We honor the faithful, unwavering life and legacy of Dr. Karyn Purvis, who bears witness that: “I had the strength from my faith and the confidence that serving children was my calling.” This compelled her to be steadfast in decades of tending some of the most broken children.

Through Karyn’s faithful research and practice, we can all come to understand this powerful reality:

The root cause of most human brokenness was children not receiving the care they were made for.

And upon the foundation of redemptive caregiving that TBRI® has established, we can all grow in more wisdom, knowledge, insight, compassion and tenderness in the way we care for any children God has entrusted us to shepherd.

It should be non-negotiable for current or future caregivers of children from hard places to understand Attachment By Design…

Because only when we understand the way God originally designed attachment—can we truly understand the struggles these children are up against…

Why they are so vulnerable…

What is really going on behind their brokenness… and what it really requires to be part of their long-term restoration.

However, on this Trust Journey we do not have to be current—or even future—caregivers of vulnerable children to receive what God has for us…

For the Wisdom of Care is all about seeing that every child was originally designed with the same need for primary care…

That any child who has not experienced the trust-based relationships they were made for—can only heal and grow through trust-based relationship.

So whether you’re a caregiver of the vulnerable, whether you’ve been an adoptive mother or father for years, or whether you’re a current mother or father, whether you have kids on the way, or whether you want to be a mother or father… THIS INVITATION… to know more about the way God designed childhood development, the brain and relationship… and to know more about the way Jesus tends the vulnerable… is for you!
